Acknowledgement of Country
Before we begin, Children by Choice acknowledges the traditional custodians of the lands on which we work and pays respect to elders past and present.
We acknowledge that sovereignty was never ceded.
We also recognise that First Nations peoples have historically been and continue to be excluded from conversation about their own reproductive health. That exclusion has had lasting impacts for us.
Advancing reproductive justice means centering First Nations leadership, voices and self-determination.

1970-1972
The Abortion Law Reform Assocition (ALRA) was established in 1971 to educate women and men about family planning and advance Queensland women's rights to access safe and legal abortion.
On the 19th March 1972, ALRA formed an organiosation to provide unplanned pregnancy counselling and assistance for women, to be known as Children by Choice.
In 1984, Children by Choice purchased premises at Windsor, in Inner Brisbane, through the efforts of many supporters. However, this positive increase in services was met with a renewed political and media interest in the subject of abortion during the 1980s.
1985 Police Raids
In 1985, the Greenslopes clinic endured a series of police raids and prosecutions, resulting in a landmark court decision in Rv Bayliss and Cullen, legalising abortion under common law though it remained in the State's Criminal Code.
Unfortunately, funding insecurity continued with funding withdrawn by the 1996 Liberal National government. Volunteers operating from our owned premises kept the Association viable during this lean time.
When government funding was received again in 1999, Children by Choice sought to re-establish a comprehensive counselling and education service for Queensland women.
RU486 and Decriminalisation Act
In 2006, Children by Choice was one of the key organisations that successfully campagned to remove the ban on importing RU486, the 'abortion drug', into Australia. This paved the way for introduction of medication abortion services into Queensland and then other Australian states.
Queensland Law Reform Commission and the Termination of Pregnancy Act was subsequently passed in 2018. Abortion is now decriminalised in Queensland and is treated as a healthcare issue.

Supporting Reproductive Choice Training
Supporting Reproductive Choices is an evidence-based, interactive training rogram designed for Queensland Hospital and Health Service professionals.
Delivered by Children by Choice, the training strengthens confidence in pregnancy options support, abortion care, reproductive coercion and abuse (RCA), and conscientious objection within Queensland's legislative framework.
Grounded in trauma-informed, rights-based practive, it uquips teams to navigate values, reduce stigma, and provide compassionate, high-quality care.
